Tonawanda Mediterranean Diet Lowers Risk Of Cognitive Decline, Osteoporosis & Fracture Risk

Thoughts of the Mediterranean bring postcard-worthy images of beautiful blue ocean waters, sandy beaches, clear blue skies…and food? Yes, food! Chiropractic Spine Sports And Rehabilitation shares nutrition tips, and the Mediterranean diet is bantered around the world of nutrition for its multiple health advantages as well it should in our chiropractic world, too. Fish, fruits, and veggies are healthy for all of us in our Tonawanda chiropractic family!

BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET

With the expanding recognition that diet offers a beneficial role in health and prevention of disease issues like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being developed. A new paper with suggestions for guidelines endorsed a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to provide calcium and protein sufficient enough to preserve normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are related to a reduced risk of fracture. (1) In other studies, the Mediterranean diet has been said to reduce hip fracture risk. Another new paper explains that there is evidence that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also reduce hip fracture risk in addition to threat of lumbar spine osteoporosis in women. (2) A study just released this past month pointed out that older adults who adhered the Meditterranean Diet more strictly had reduced odds of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, reduced osteoporosis odds, decreased probability of cognitive decline and hip fracture may be inspiring to try and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? Chiropractic Spine Sports And Rehabilitation finds these new studies interesting enough to share with our Tonawanda chiropractic patients and their families.

WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?

What foods are in the mediterranean diet? Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt, seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water, juices. It suggests staying away from sugars, refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not easy!
