Tonawanda Strong Bones, Fewer Falls Vitamin D Plays a Bigger Role Than You Think

VITAMIN D IS GOOD FOR US ALL, ESPECIALLY US OLDER FOLKS!

If vitamin D has come up at your chiropractic appointments lately, you're not alone — and there's solid science behind why it keeps entering the conversation. This sunshine vitamin is quietly doing essential work in our bodies — and two newly published research papers remind us just how much it counts, especially as we get older. At Chiropractic Spine Sports And Rehabilitation, we love sharing research like this with our patients in Tonawanda — read on to see what the latest science says about vitamin D and your health and how adding it to the chiropractic treatment plan may benefit you!

WHAT THE LATEST RESEARCH IS TELLING US

A major systematic review and meta-analysis released in The BMJ: British Medical Journal in May 2026 examined 69 clinical trials involving nearly 154,000 participants to assess calcium and vitamin D supplementation for fracture and fall prevention. Researchers found that calcium and vitamin D consumed in combination was associated with a somewhat lowered fracture risk — a meaningful finding for anyone who has witnessed a parent or grandparent struggle after a fall. While no supplement is a magic bullet, this kind of large-scale evidence helps guide practical, whole-person care. (1)

The second paper, published in Frontiers in Endocrinology in April 2026, looked even more broadly at what vitamin D offers aging bodies. Vitamin D supplementation, especially combined with physical exercise, is linked with improvements in muscle strength and postural balance in osteoporotic patients, and a reduced risk of falling. That's a big deal! And when it comes to staying upright and independent as we age, strong muscles and steady balance may be the most valuable protection we have. (2)

MORE THAN JUST BONES — VITAMIN D'S REACH SURPRISES US

What's noticeable is that the research found roughly 6 in 10 older adults are vitamin D-deficient — and the consequences reach well beyond bones, touching muscle health, heart function, brain health, and even how long we live. Simply put, vitamin D is one of those nutrients our whole body is counting on. (2)

YOUR SPINE, YOUR NUTRITION, YOUR CARE PLAN — ALL CONNECTED

Here at Chiropractic Spine Sports And Rehabilitation, we care about the whole you — not just the joint or disc that brought you to us. Cox® Technic, the gentle, non-force spinal manipulation we use to alleviate back pain from disc and non-disc conditions, works beautifully alongside good nutrition. Healthy vitamin D levels support the muscles and bones that border your spine, which means your treatments may feel better and hold longer when your body has the building blocks it desires.

So are you ready? Talk with your chiropractor at Chiropractic Spine Sports And Rehabilitation about getting your vitamin D levels checked — a simple blood test tells the story. Many of us, especially those of us spending more time indoors, are deficient without knowing it. Whether it's a supplement, a little more time in the sun, or vitamin D-rich foods like salmon and fortified dairy, small steps add up.

Your spine, your muscles, your bones — they all work together. So do we.
